ENERTRAG’s 39MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project in northern France has reached financial close, with construction underway and commercial operations expected to begin in spring 2027.

The Les Sablons development, located in Vendeuil in the Hauts-de-France region, will provide 117MWh of storage capacity using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology. With a three-hour storage duration, the project is among France’s first developments of its kind.

The facility is designed to support the integration of renewable energy into the electricity system, helping to improve flexibility as the share of variable generation increases.

    Technical due diligence supports financing

Renewable energy consultancy Natural Power was appointed by ENERTRAG to carry out technical due diligence ahead of the project’s financing.

The assessment covered the project’s permitting arrangements, grid connection, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) agreements, and operations and maintenance (O&M) contracts. Natural Power also reviewed the route-to-market agreement and the technical assumptions underpinning the project’s financial model.

Julien Teixeira, senior technical adviser for BESS at Natural Power, said: “Les Sablons is an important project in the development of France’s BESS market, combining three-hour storage duration with co-location alongside significant wind generation.

“We are pleased to have supported ENERTRAG through the technical due diligence process and to have contributed our BESS expertise to the financing of the project.”

The project’s combination of battery storage and substantial wind generation reflects the growing role of energy storage in managing fluctuations in renewable electricity output and providing greater flexibility to power markets.

    France’s battery storage market develops

Battery storage is becoming an increasingly important component of Europe’s energy transition, enabling electricity to be stored when generation is high and released when demand or market conditions require it.

Projects such as Les Sablons can help address the variability of wind and solar generation while supporting the wider integration of renewables into national electricity networks.

Natural Power said it has supported more than 25GW of energy storage projects globally, with expertise covering storage technology, consenting, contracting, construction, energy analysis and asset management.
