R.Power has brought its first standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) into operation in Poland, with the 5MW/10MWh Herby project in Lubliniec County marking the start of a wider European storage expansion.

The project is designed to support grid stability and represents an important step in the independent power producer’s plans to develop a portfolio of large-scale battery storage assets across Europe.

Herby secured a long-term contract in Poland’s December 2024 capacity market auction, with construction beginning in the fourth quarter of 2025. The project subsequently secured an additional capacity market contract in September 2026, providing further contracted capacity revenues.

    Trading agreement supports market integration

R.Power has appointed energy trader Entrix to optimise the Herby battery’s participation in relevant electricity markets through automated trading. Qualification for balancing services is still under way.

The arrangement is intended to establish an approach that can be replicated across R.Power’s wider battery storage portfolio, combining market optimisation with the revenue opportunities available through capacity market contracts.

The project’s asymmetrical battery design also forms part of its commercial proposition, according to R.Power chief commercial officer Rafał Hajduk.

“Herby is the first standalone BESS in R.Power’s portfolio to reach the market,” said Hajduk.

“We look forward to working together with Entrix on this interesting asset with capacity market contracts and asymmetrical battery design,” he added.

1.6GW storage pipeline planned across Europe

Herby is the first operational asset in a much larger development programme. R.Power currently has a battery storage pipeline totalling 1.6GW/5.8GWh, spanning projects in Poland and Romania.

The developments include Jedwabno, Dzięgielewo and Gdańsk in Poland, alongside Scornicesti and Studina in Romania. Their delivery would significantly expand the company’s presence in the European storage market.

Battery energy storage is becoming increasingly important as electricity systems accommodate more variable renewable generation. Batteries can help balance supply and demand, respond to changing wholesale electricity prices and provide services that support grid reliability. Their commercial performance depends on how effectively operators combine these market opportunities with contracted revenues and the technical capabilities of each asset.

Hajduk said the new project represented progress towards meeting the region’s growing need for storage.

“With a combined capacity of 1.6 GW / 5.8 GWh across several large BESS assets in the pipeline today – including Jedwabno, Dzięgielewo, Gdańsk, Scornicesti and Studina – we’re taking the next step on the journey to deliver the storage capacity Poland and Europe needs.”
