Vattenfall secures a power purchase agreement for solar energy with a German chemical company

Vattenfall has entered into a long-term electricity supply agreement with specialty chemicals company Evonik, wherein Vattenfall will provide approximately 120 gigawatt-hours of solar power annually. Starting from 2025, two solar farms owned by Vattenfall in Schleswig-Holstein will serve as the sources of power for Evonik. One of these farms is situated south of Flensburg in Silberstedt, while details about the second location are yet to be confirmed by the company.

Both solar farms, with a combined capacity of 120 megawatts, are slated for completion and grid connection in 2025. The collaboration is anticipated to offer investment security, a stable supply of green electricity, and risk diversification for both Vattenfall and Evonik, with the agreed-upon terms spanning a duration of 10 years.

Responsible board member and head of the markets division at Vattenfall, Martijn Hagens, commented “Germany is the fastest growing market for renewable energies in Europe,”

“We see diverse growth opportunities here for the development and marketing of our solar, onshore and offshore projects. As the project with Evonik shows, electricity partnerships with industry play a crucial role here.”

Member of the board responsible for sustainability at Evonik, Thomas Wessel, added “Evonik has an ambitious sustainability strategy – and we are reliably implementing what we have set out to do: in 2022, Evonik concluded supply contracts for green electricity from wind power.”

“In 2024 we are looking forward to the first major supply contracts for solar power. “We are reaching another milestone on our way to converting our externally sourced electricity to 100% green by 2030.”
