Vattenfall has unveiled its intentions to construct a 630MW offshore wind farm in the North Sea region of Germany.
The project, known as Nordlicht 2, will be established in the N-6.6 offshore wind power area, and Vattenfall secured the development rights through the exercise of its entry privileges.
In September 2022, Vattenfall exercised a similar right for the N-7.2 wind farm area, leading to the development of the Nordlicht 1 wind farm with a substantial 980MW capacity.
Both the N-7.2 and N-6.6 areas were auctioned by the Federal Network Agency as part of the transition to offshore wind energy tendering procedures, resulting in a combined total capacity of 1610MW across these wind farms.
Pending final investment decisions, Nordlicht 1 is expected to be grid-connected by 2027, with Nordlicht 2 following suit in 2028.
Head of Germany at Vattenfall, Christian Barthélémy, said “With investments in the Nordlicht 1 and 2 wind farms, we are making an important contribution to achieving the German expansion target for offshore wind of 30GW.
“Despite the recently much more difficult framework conditions under which the entire industry is suffering, we are hereby flying the flag for offshore wind energy in Germany.
“In view of the recent sharp rise in costs for the construction and operation of offshore wind farms, we expect possible synergies at two neighbouring wind farms, which could have a cost-dampening effect.”
Nordlicht 2, originally known as Atlantis 1, was initially developed in 2017 by Vattenfall, then re-auctioned under a new offshore wind tendering system.
Vattenfall still retains the right of entry, and this proactive approach has allowed the company to continue contributing to Germany’s offshore wind energy sector.
