ScottishPower has entered into a partnership with ZeroAvia to investigate the creation of environmentally friendly hydrogen supply solutions for crucial airports, aiming to promote the decarbonization of air travel.
Through this collaboration, the two companies will examine the feasibility of implementing hydrogen infrastructure at airports to support hydrogen-electric flight and explore potential applications. ZeroAvia, already in a longstanding partnership with AGS Airports, plans to utilize hydrogen-electric engines that produce electricity using hydrogen fuel cells, emitting only water as a by-product.
With ambitions to commercialize aircraft engines by 2027, ZeroAvia is advancing its technology. In parallel, ScottishPower will focus on developing green hydrogen solutions, using electrolysers powered by 100% renewable energy from its UK-based wind farms to test and energize aeroengines. Together, the companies aim to contribute to the UK government’s target of achieving a minimum of 6GW of electrolytic green hydrogen production by 2030.
Director of ScottishPower’s Green Hydrogen business, Peter Jones, commented “Green hydrogen, powered by renewable energy, can play a key role in the decarbonisation of heavy transport. We welcome the opportunity to support the aviation industry in delivering effective solutions for this important sector, enabling long-term sustainable and cost-effective outcomes for customers.”
Chief business officer at ZeroAvia, Sergey Kiselev, added “With the plethora of existing renewables, and many projects planned, Scotland has the chance to lead the UK in developing clean hydrogen supply. Working with leading energy companies like ScottishPower can help us overcome fuelling infrastructure challenges.”
