The team behind the Salamander floating wind project has taken a significant step by submitting an offshore consent application for their proposed 100MW venture off the coast of Scotland. This move, hailed as a substantial progression by the Salamander consortium consisting of Orsted, Simply Blue Group, and Subsea7, places the project 35 km from Peterhead.

Importantly, Salamander’s initiative promises to bolster the Scottish floating wind supply chain by providing a significant early opportunity for capability development, aiding its expansion in preparation for forthcoming projects under the ScotWind and INTOG seabed leasing initiatives.

The INTOG round, distinguishing between small-scale innovation ventures and larger projects aimed at decarbonizing oil and gas infrastructure, granted Exclusivity Agreements to selected projects. Salamander secured an Exclusivity Agreement in the innovation category.

Emphasizing their commitment to Scottish involvement, both in construction and operation, the Salamander team aims to mitigate future risks and attract investment, thereby maximizing Scotland’s benefits from the transition to renewable energy.

Project Director for Salamander, Hugh Yendole, commented “We have submitted a high-quality, thorough consent application and we’re committed to continue working with the necessary stakeholders throughout the approval process.”

“Ambitious targets from both the Scottish and UK governments are not yet complemented by the infrastructure and supply chain required to deliver the floating wind pipeline in the UK.”

“The timely delivery of Salamander is critical for industry in ensuring we provide opportunities to enable the UK supply chain – we want to encourage investment in local ports and indigenous technologies that will pave the way for a decarbonised future.”

Community involvement persists, with a third public consultation scheduled for May 29 at the Scottish Maritime Academy in Peterhead. This gathering will encompass the entire project but will particularly delve into the specifics of the onshore consent application set for submission later in 2024.
