RWE granted permit for 495MW South Korean offshore wind farm

RWE has obtained a crucial permit for the 495MW Seohae offshore wind farm situated off the coast of South Korea. Local authorities have issued the German developer an Electricity Business Licence (EBL) for the project, which is positioned around 45km from Taean County in Chungcheongnam Province.

This license marks RWE’s initial exclusive development rights for offshore wind in Korea since establishing an office in Seoul back in 2021. The acquisition of an EBL, which is a mandatory authorization enabling companies to generate and supply electricity in Korea, represents a significant milestone for RWE in advancing its inaugural Korean offshore wind venture.

Sven Utermöhle, offshore wind chief, said “This first Electricity Business Licence is a key milestone in the further development of our Seohae offshore wind project.”

“As RWE, we are dedicated to delivering clean, sustainable renewable energy and helping to achieve Korea’s renewable energy targets. We would like to thank the Korean government and local stakeholders for their trust in us and for supporting our project.”

RWE stated that the subsequent phase in advancing the Seohae project involves collaborating with indigenous vendors to persist in engineering and conducting environmental impact assessment studies. Additionally, it will interact with the local county and the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) to strategize and finalize a grid connection agreement.

RWE has set up a development pipeline for offshore wind projects totaling 3GW in Korea, encompassing Seohae, the 510MW Neulsaem Ui project situated off Shinan County, and the 2GW Hanee Baram project in Incheon.
