Ramboll secures preliminary Front-End Engineering Design (pre-FEED) contract for the 1GW Bowdun project

Thistle Wind Partners (TWP) has granted Ramboll the pre-FEED (front-end engineering design) contract for the foundations of its 1GW Bowdun offshore wind venture in Scotland. Ramboll will advance the foundation concepts for Bowdun as the project proceeds with its pre-FEEDs this year.

The tasks involve designing the substructure for wind turbines, including a preliminary jacket design concept suitable for water depths of up to 70 meters. Additionally, the work will incorporate various geotechnical sensitivity assessments to guide the wind farm’s future development. Ramboll will also devise offshore substation foundation concepts for both the Bowdun project and TWP’s Ayre offshore wind farm.

This design effort aims to establish a comprehensive design framework for the projects and inform fabrication, transport, and installation requirements at a later stage. Following this phase, FEED and detailed design procurement are slated to begin in the spring of the following year. This announcement closely follows COWI’s recent contract win to conduct comprehensive pre-FEED studies for both projects’ onshore and offshore electrical and civil designs.

TWP initiated project development in January 2022 after securing seabed lease options from Crown Estate Scotland for the 1GW Ayre Offshore Wind Farm (located off the Orkney coast) and the 1GW Bowdun Offshore Wind Farm (off the Aberdeenshire coast).

Project Director at TWP, Ian Taylor, commented “These contract announcements demonstrate the good progress we have made on the concept designs for both of our projects. Further tenders for design and engineering support will be announced on our own website and on the North Sea Transition Authority’s Energy Pathfinder.”

“Kick-off meetings for both contracts have taken place at our headquarters in Edinburgh over the past month, and we look forward to expanding our network of suppliers as the year progresses.”

Global Executive Director Wind at Ramboll, Tim Fischer, added “We are excited that TWP has selected Ramboll for this key development scope of the Bowdun Offshore Wind Project.”

“Assessing the foundations in a holistic manner and with input to the overall delivery package, including fabrication and logistics, is one of our key services on the market.”

“We look forward to applying these skills through our local UK team of experts and to collaborating with our project partners to bring this exciting project forward.”
