Prysmian Group successfully completes installation of Viking Link cables

The Prysmian Group has achieved a successful installation and high-voltage testing process for its 1400km of power cables, which encompass both underwater and on-land segments, for the Viking Link Interconnector connecting the UK and Denmark.

Viking Link, a collaboration between National Grid and Energinet, is expected to become operational by the end of 2023. This interconnector, the world’s longest HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) onshore and offshore link, will facilitate the exchange of clean energy between the two nations.

Prysmian secured a contract worth approximately €700 million in August 2019 from National Grid and Energinet. This comprehensive agreement encompassed the complete package, including the design, production, and installation of 1250km of submarine cables and roughly 135km of onshore cables on the UK side.

Operating at ±525kV DC, the interconnector will have the capacity to transfer up to 1400MW of power across UK, Dutch, German, and Danish waters, utilizing single-core, mass-impregnated paper-insulated cables. Its primary aim is to expand access to renewable and sustainable energy sources for over 1.4 million households, reducing electricity costs in the UK and enhancing system reliability.

Hakan Ozmen, Executive Vice President of Projects BU at Prysmian Group, stated “This important milestone confirms Prysmian’s reliability in executing complex turn-key projects.”

“We are committed to supporting countries in achieving their sustainability goals and we are proud of our long-standing relationship with National Grid and Energinet that will help the UK and Denmark to significantly reduce their carbon emissions.”

All cables were manufactured at Prysmian Group’s Arco Felice center of excellence in Italy. Cable installation involved the utilization of the Leonardo da Vinci vessel in its inaugural offshore campaign, as well as the Cable Enterprise vessel.

Alberto Boffelli, Head of Project Operations at Projects BU, Prysmian Group, commented “Prysmian has invested heavily in the past years to upgrade its cable-laying fleet and wide range of high–tech burial equipment, consolidating the Group’s leadership in the submarine cables business, while boosting insourcing installation capabilities in order to ensure successful and flawless project execution and on-time delivery.”
