Permit for 1500MW Skåne offshore project given to Orsted

Permission has been given to Orsted to build the 1500MW Skåne Wind Farm – Natura 2000, which is located off the coast of Sweden.

Permission was granted by the County Administrative Board in Skåne, to build and run the Skåne Offshore Wind Farm.

The offshore wind farm will be located in Skåne, in Sweden’s economic zone, 22 kilometres south of Ystad and Trelleborg.

About 7TWh of production is anticipated each year. According to Orsted, this equates to half of Skåne’s current electricity consumption.

The County Administrative Board had already advised the government to approve the wind farm’s construction.

The wind farm is anticipated to begin operations in 2029.

Sebastian Hald Buhl, Sweden manager at Orsted, said “This is a very important and positive message from the county board, now there is nothing to prevent the government from giving its approval for the Skåne Offshore Wind Farm.”

“If we get a quick decision this year, the wind farm can deliver cheaper locally produced and reliable electricity as early as 2029 and contribute to meeting Sweden’s rapidly increasing electricity needs.”

The Natura 2000 area of Southwest Skne’s ocean waters, which was created to safeguard natural values, is close to Skne Havsvindpark.

In December 2022, the County Administrative Board in Skne, which was tasked by the government with drafting Orsted’s proposal to construct an offshore wind farm in the water within Sweden’s economic zone, declared that they thought the offshore wind farm may be approved.

A favourable result of the Natura 2000 experiment was one need, which the county administration board has now affirmed.

Jesper Kühn Olesen, Project director for Orsted’s offshore wind farms in Sweden, said “The decision shows that it is possible to combine high natural values with fossil-free electricity production at sea.”

“Over several years, we have carried out a long series of studies of the potential impact of the wind farm.”

“The work has now been reviewed by the county administration and around 30 authorities, municipalities and interest organisations and we are happy that they draw the same conclusion as us.”

In Sweden, Orsted is building a total of 6 offshore wind farms.

The energy business revealed that four further offshore wind farms are planned in western, southern, and central Sweden where there is a huge need for expanded electricity production, in addition to Skne Offshore Wind Park and Gotland Offshore Wind Park.
