Nordex’s hybrid tower has been granted approval in Germany

Nordex has confirmed that its latest turbine, along with its initially planned tower variations, is progressing as scheduled. This follows the approval obtained for a 179-meter hybrid tower in Germany. Throughout this year, Nordex aims to install the first pair of N175/6.X turbines from the Delta4000 series in Germany, featuring different hub heights.

The installation will utilize two tower designs: a 112-meter tubular steel tower and an internally developed Nordex hybrid tower composed of concrete and steel, boasting a hub height of 179 meters. Nordex had previously secured DIBt type approval from TÜV SÜD for the N175/6.X on the 112-meter tubular steel tower by the end of 2023.

Now, TÜV SÜD has granted type approval for Nordex’s newly developed 179-meter hybrid tower. This certification is a crucial step for obtaining building permits in Germany for installing the N175/6.X on the 179-meter hybrid tower. The certificate was presented on March 20, 2024, at Nordex’s booth during the WindEurope conference in Bilbao, Spain.

Vice president region central of the Nordex Group, Karsten Brüggemann, said “Germany is one of the target markets for the 179-metre tower. With a rotor diameter of 175 metres and an installed capacity of more than 6MW, the N175/6.X turbine in combination with this high hybrid tower makes it possible to considerably increase energy production especially at low-wind sites far away from the coast.”

Head of support structures on- and offshore at TÜV SÜD Industrie Service, Stephan Mayer, added “The successful type approval is an independent confirmation that the requirements of the DIBt guideline for wind turbines have been met.”

“Especially in innovative developments such as the new hybrid tower from Nordex, the 4-eyes principle is a key element in ensuring safety and reliability.”

In November 2023, the Nordex Group completed the installation of the initial turbines from the N163/5.X sister model, utilizing internally developed hybrid towers. These hybrid towers, with a hub height of 168 meters, share similarities in construction with the planned 179-meter hybrid tower in Germany.

Nordex’s development of the hybrid tower draws upon extensive experience gained from designing and manufacturing concrete towers, with over 2,500 such structures currently in operation. The hybrid tower design involves assembling convex metal segments on-site, each up to 20 meters in length, which are tensioned before the installation of steel sections, the nacelle, and the rotor.
