Lhyfe has received a grant of up to £14 million from H2 Pioneros for the development of a green hydrogen plant in Spain. This facility, situated in Vallmoll (Tarragona), marks Lhyfe’s inaugural green hydrogen production site in Spain, while concurrently, seven sites are currently in progress across Europe.
With projects spanning 11 countries and a European pipeline exceeding 10GW, Lhyfe’s new plant in Vallmoll aims to meet the growing demand for green hydrogen from various industrial companies in the region. Prospective clients include businesses in chemical and other industrial sectors seeking to replace fossil fuels in their production processes with environmentally friendly green hydrogen.
Potential beneficiaries also extend to transport and logistics companies interested in transitioning their fleets to less environmentally impactful vehicles, such as hydrogen-powered electric vehicles.
This initiative by Lhyfe stands out as one of only 14 projects in Spain in 2023 to secure grant financing from H2 Pioneros. The grant, covering design phases, equipment supply, and construction work, accounts for approximately half of the overall estimated investment in the project. The first production of green hydrogen is anticipated in 2026.
Chief business officer at Lhyfe, Taia Kronborg, stated “We are very happy to have been awarded this grant, which we see as a clear reward of our efforts and as the recognition of our expertise in the production and delivery of green hydrogen to multiples customers over the last two years.
“It is also a proof of us going the right direction in Spain, and we would like to reiterate our commitment to the Spanish hydrogen strategy and welcome the fact that Spain is focusing on the rapid expansion of a hydrogen infrastructure based on renewable energies.
“This project will make a significant contribution towards providing competitive green hydrogen for many industrial and transport companies in the province of Tarragona.
“It will support our objective to increase the penetration of green hydrogen throughout Spain in other similar industrial processes.”
The execution of the project is contingent upon obtaining operational authorizations, construction permits, and financial investment approvals.
