India’s Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched its inaugural offshore wind tender, offering a substantial capacity of over 7 gigawatts.
This tender covers seven locations off the coast of Tamil Nadu in southern India, encompassing an expansive area of 1443 square kilometers capable of supporting 7.2GW of power generation.
To oversee the bidding process, MNRE has entrusted the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE).
The tender notice specifies that bids for 4.1GW of projects will be released in January 2024, with the remaining capacity available in the subsequent financial year.
Interested parties are invited to conduct surveys of the proposed locations. Initially, the seabed area will be leased to developers for a five-year term, extendable on a case-by-case basis.
Successful bidders are required to commission their sites, including conducting necessary surveys, within this timeframe, with NIWE providing oversight on progress.
Following commissioning, the project lease will be extended for the operational lifespan of the development.
This initiative marks a significant step in India’s efforts to expand its offshore wind energy sector and diversify its renewable energy portfolio.
