Iberdrola and Amazon have created the largest global PPA in history to develop substantial renewable energy projects.
By establishing offtake agreements for projects in Europe, the US, and Asia-Pacific, the two have decided to work together on additional wind and solar capacity.
The agreements will support Amazon in meeting its goal of using only renewable energy to power its facilities by 2025, five years earlier than its initial 2030 pledge.
Amazon will receive 1.1TWh of sustainable energy annually from the Baltic Eagle and Windanker offshore wind farms, which is enough to power more than 314,000 European homes for a year.
Baltic Eagle is located in the Baltic Sea, north of the island of Rügen and will have a total capacity of 476MW when completed in 2024 .
The Baltic Sea-based Windanker, which will be finished in 2026 and have a 300MW installed capacity, is also located there.
The initiatives are a part of Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub, one of the biggest offshore wind clusters in the area when it is completed. The Baltic Hub will have a total capacity of 1100 MW.
Iberdrola has chosen Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) as its preferred cloud provider in addition to the renewable energy agreement with Amazon.
AWS will assist the energy provider as it further digitises its operations to promote connected clean power, engaged customers, and smarter grids.
Iberdrola’s executive chairman, Ignacio Galán, said “The challenge of electrifying our energy system to increase our autonomy and reduce emissions requires partnerships between leaders like Iberdrola and Amazon.”
“The agreement today, combining sun, wind, and cloud, will enable new renewable generation capacity around the world and accelerate the digital revolution in the energy sector.”
“AWS technologies will support our digital strategy to continue increasing quality of supply and provide cleaner and fully-interconnected energy services for our customers.”
