EDP Renewables (EDPR), has linked its first hybrid plant to the grid, which combines the production of wind and solar energy on a single site.

With a direct link to the substation, the Mina de Orgueirel solar farm was established close to the Mosteiro wind park in the Portuguese municipality of Sabugal, utilising the existing electrical infrastructure to build a hybrid electricity production complex.

This park combines the two distinct technologies for the first time on the Iberian Peninsula, furthering grid decarbonization and boosting the amount of renewable energy available.

With more than 17,000 bifacial solar panels that can capture solar irradiance from both sides, the solar plant has an installed capacity of 8.4 MW and can maximise energy output.

With eight turbines and an additional more potent machine erected as part of an over-equipment project, the wind park has a total installed capacity of 11MW.

The hybrid project has the capacity to generate up to 39.5 GWh annually, which is sufficient to supply more than 30,000 people with renewable energy. Additionally, the hybrid complex will aid in reducing annual CO2 emissions by about 18,000 tonnes.

“The commissioning of EDPR’s first hybrid wind/solar park is a reflection of our pioneering and innovative spirit as well as a deepening of our commitment to energy transition within our core business regions,” said Duarte Bello, EDPR executive director for Europe and Latin America.

“By taking this hybrid approach we will be able to increase the amount of electricity produced in the region as well as minimising the impact of new undertakings in renewables by maximising use of the pre-existing infrastructure. We intend to carry on investing in the hybridisation of parks held in our portfolio, both in Portugal as well as in other regions with strong development potential.”
