On Wednesday, Neoen SA announced the commencement of the construction phase for a 93.9-megawatt/93.9-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Sweden, with plans to bring it online next year. Neoen has issued a notice to proceed to Japan’s Nidec, which will oversee the engineering and construction while supplying battery containers and inverters from its facilities in France and Italy.
Named the Isbillen Power Reserve, this lithium-ion battery is anticipated to become the largest energy storage facility in Sweden and the Nordics. Situated in the northern county of Vasternorrland, the facility is scheduled for operation in the first quarter of 2025. The Isbillen Power Reserve will provide frequency containment reserve services to the transmission system operator Svenska Kraftnat.
Neoen will serve as the long-term operator of the battery, situated in close proximity to its Storen Power Reserve, a 52-megawatt/52-megawatt-hour energy storage project nearing completion. Neoen highlighted a robust pipeline of renewable energy projects in Sweden, with over 400 megawatts of BESS projects. On a global scale, the company has 1.6 gigawatts/1.3 gigawatt-hours of batteries either in operation or under construction.
