Finland is set to initiate a tender for the development of two offshore wind ventures, boasting a combined capacity of 3000 megawatts. The Edith site is situated in the Narpio sea area, while the Ebba project is located in the sea areas near Pyhajoki and Raahe.
The State Council of the country has given a preliminary approval to commence the auction process for Finland’s public water zones in five offshore wind power regions. The land management authority, Metsahallitus, will promptly launch a commercial tender to select developers for the two designated sites.
Regional municipalities have endorsed the zoning initiatives for these projects, and preliminary studies conducted by Metsahallitus are advancing. The tender completion for the remaining three areas is anticipated to be confirmed by 2024, with the competition expected to last approximately one year.
The collective investment for the projects is estimated to range between €6 billion and €8 billion. Upon realization, these ventures are projected to generate up to 14 terawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, constituting over 17% of Finland’s current electricity consumption.
Juha Niemela, Metsahallitus chief executive, commented “The government’s decision comes at a good time and is a concrete step forward to increase the production of offshore wind power in Finland in the early 2030s. We will continue our determined work to enable clean energy production in accordance with the goals of Finland’s green transition.”
