Eku Energy to begin construction on two battery storage projects in UK

Energy storage developer Eku Energy is set to start construction soon on two new battery storage projects in the UK.

These projects, located in Basildon, Essex, and Loudwater, Buckinghamshire, will have a combined capacity of 130 MWh and play a crucial role in providing flexibility to support the UK electricity system, promote renewable energy generation, and drive the country’s transition towards cleaner energy sources.

Construction at both sites is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2023, with commercial operations expected to commence by the end of 2024.

Since its launch in November 2022, Eku Energy has experienced rapid growth, expanding its battery storage portfolio to 1.2GWh across various locations, including Australia, Italy, Japan, Taiwan, and the UK.

Eku Energy has collaborated with NHOA Group to supply two stand-alone battery energy storage systems for the Basildon and Loudwater projects. As part of the deal, a long-term service agreement has been established to ensure the operational maintenance of the batteries.

Eku Energy chief executive Sandra Grauers Nilsson said: “Battery storage is essential to the decarbonisation of electricity systems globally and Eku Energy is focused on delivering safe, secure and reliable solutions at scale and pace.

“We are delighted to have partnered with NHOA Energy on these two new battery storage projects as we continue to expand our global battery storage portfolio.”

Eku Energy is currently in the process of building a 40MW/40MWh battery in Maldon, Essex, and has also unveiled a new collaboration with Renera Energy to work on a substantial 1GW battery storage project in Italy.

Originally founded by Macquarie’s Green Investment Group, Eku Energy is now co-owned by a managed fund from Macquarie Asset Management and the British Columbia Investment Management Corporation.
