Dominion has set up its first monopile at the massive 2.6-gigawatt American titan project

Dominion Energy has erected the initial turbine foundation at the 2600-megawatt Coastal Virginia offshore wind farm (CVOW) in the United States. The DEME Offshore vessel Orion positioned the monopile, provided by EEW, at the location situated 29 miles away from Virginia Beach, marking it as the largest offshore wind farm in the US thus far. Scheduled for completion in late 2026, CVOW will incorporate 176 Siemens Gamesa turbines.

Dominion Energy’s chair, president and chief executive officer, Robert M. Blue, said “This is a monumental day for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind team, who have worked tirelessly to keep this project on budget and on schedule to provide our customers with reliable, affordable and increasingly clean energy.”

“We are taking extensive precautions to ensure this project is fully protective of the environment and to protect marine species. We are proud to partner with Dominion Energy on this landmark project,” added Bill White, President DEME Offshore US.”

“DEME’s Orion vessel, equipped with industry-leading Vibro Hammer technology, is uniquely designed to efficiently install CVOW’s massive monopiles, all weighing over 1,000 tons.”

“Our talented project team will include skilled American union pile drivers, creating a robust and prepared workforce. We look forward to working with our consortium partner Prysmian to help deliver Virginia-made energy to the Commonwealth.”

Dominion Energy plans to continue installing monopiles until the fall of 2024, then pause operations until May 2025. This pause aligns with efforts to safeguard the endangered North Atlantic right whale, as no monopile installations will occur between November 1 and April 30, coinciding with the whales’ migration past the project area.

Additional precautions to protect whales and other marine life involve utilizing bubble curtains, which are perforated hoses that emit air to form a barrier of bubbles around the monopiles during installation, dampening soundwaves underwater.

Furthermore, vessels will be equipped with Protected Species Observers and will adhere to speed restrictions to minimize the risk of collisions with protected species.
