DEME considers the prospect of engaging in Greek offshore wind ventures

DEME and Greek renewable energy developer Faria have forged a partnership to explore and collaboratively develop offshore wind farms in the Greek waters. Through the cooperation agreement between DEME and Faria Renewables, both companies recognize the significant growth potential within the Mediterranean Sea’s offshore wind industry. They intend to play a substantial role in this evolving market.

Pooling their expertise and leveraging their respective track records, DEME and Faria Renewables plan to conduct a thorough assessment of Greece’s maritime areas. Their objective is to pinpoint optimal locations for the development of offshore wind farms. This process will involve extensive research, exploration, and engagement with stakeholders and local communities.

Given the global imperative to achieve zero emissions, offshore wind technology is considered pivotal in advancing towards such environmental goals.

In alignment with these objectives, the Greek government has recently unveiled the draft “National Offshore Wind Farms Development Programme,” overseen by the Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company (HEREMA). This program delineates eligible Organised Development Areas and anticipates a capacity of approximately 4.9GW for offshore wind projects in the mid-term (up to 2030-2032).

Excluded from this estimate is the marine area between Evros-Samothraki, designated for pilot offshore wind farm projects. Additionally, the program envisions a capacity of around 12.4GW for the longer term, post-2030-2032.

Thalia Valkouma, President and Chief Executive at Faria Renewables commented “I am thrilled to announce our cooperation with DEME, one of the world’s leading offshore wind companies with operating projects and projects under development globally. We are confident that this partnership will leverage the capabilities and experience of both companies, working together towards a sustainable and greener future.””

“Our involvement in the development of offshore wind projects is now taking a significant step forward, and we are excited to contribute to the mid- and long-term expansion of the offshore wind sector in our country, helping Greece achieve its goals and transforming into a major energy producer and exporter.”

“Our targets for green and sustainable renewable energy as a means to fight climate change and reduce CO2 emissions are now closer to being achieved.”

Kristof Van Loon, DEME Concessions general manager added: “DEME is delighted to be contributing to the development of Greece’s offshore wind market, which we believe holds immense potential.”

“Teaming up with Faria Renewables, a company that shares our commitment to a sustainable future and recognises offshore wind as a cornerstone of Greece’s clean energy transition, is an exciting step forward.”
