Arlington Energy, a UK-based developer of battery energy storage systems (BESS), has been acquired by Masdar in Abu Dhabi.
In the past two years, the London company has advanced a pipeline of assets totaling 170MW from construction to operation.
Following Masdar’s acquisition of it, all BESS projects will be developed, built, operated, and funded under a single Masdar-Arlington platform. Masdar is supported by the UAE’s government.
Matthew Clare, Arlington Energy director, said “Partnering with Masdar allows us to accelerate our BESS rollout in the UK and will make us the leading platform for energy storage.”
“With Arlington’s experience and expertise in the procurement, construction and operational management of BESS, and Masdar’s global capabilities in renewable energy, combining forces is a natural progression.”
“This partnership creates a business with huge potential, immediately capable of delivering at scale domestically, and in other markets in the future, as more nations join the UAE and UK in setting net-zero targets.”
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Masdar chief executive, added: “By working together, we will be able to provide a more resilient and flexible energy resource, helping to accelerate the UK and other European countries’ clean energy transitions, and supporting our efforts in expanding our offshore wind and broader renewables portfolio.”
The UAE-based corporation stated that it intends to extend its investment in offshore wind and other renewable energy projects in both new and existing markets, including the UK, where it already has holdings in the London Array, Dudgeon, and Hywind Scotland offshore wind projects.
