Approval has been granted for Balance Power’s 40-megawatt battery project in the United Kingdom

Balance Power has received planning approval for a 40MW battery storage initiative in Cheshire, England. Situated in Cheadle, the project will store renewable energy during peak generation periods and release it to the grid during high-demand times, ensuring grid stability for approximately 90,000 households.

Following extensive community engagement by Balance Power, the Staffordshire Moorlands Council unanimously endorsed the project, receiving no objections from the public. The company collaborated closely with the community, town council, and local district councillors during consultations, addressing concerns and listening to input.

The project incorporates design elements aimed at achieving a 61% biodiversity net gain for habitats and 15% for hedgerows, providing broader environmental advantages and preserving existing wildlife.

This aligns with Balance Power’s commitment to identifying clean energy solutions to fulfil communities’ power requirements while contributing to positive environmental impacts.

Scheduled for operation in 2028, construction is set to commence as early as 2026. Upon completion of its 40-year lifecycle, the project will undergo decommissioning, and the site will be restored to its original use and condition.

Planning lead at Balance Power, Dan Levy,  said “We’re extremely excited about securing planning permission for this battery storage facility.”

“Not only will it make a significant contribution to Staffordshire Moorlands achieving its objectives to be carbon neutral by 2030, and bring new clean energy infrastructure to the area, but battery storage is also essential for the UK’s transition to net zero.”

“It’s crucial in diversifying the energy network and reducing the need for fossil fuel technologies. We’re also really proud to have received unanimous support from Staffordshire Moorlands and for the strong support we also received from Cheadle Town Council and nearby residents.”
